Collection of pieces for solo lyra viol, mostly in tablature. Reversing the volume, there is a copy of the first edition of Christopher Simpson's 'The Division-Violist'. On f. i is a legend to signs in the score, for example for 'shake', 'Beat', 'Slur' etc. Also on f. i is the inscription: 'Mututâ Musicâ, mutantur & mores. / Dictum Socratis à Platone & Cicerone Laudatum' On spine: 'SIMPSON'S / VIOLIST'. Engraving of Christopher Simpson on f. 77r. On f. iii is the name 'Mr Jo. Wray of Brant Broughton / Violist'. Former owner's name crossed out on f. i: 'W Cartwright'
