Notes: Scorebook of anthems inscribed 'Richard Poole, Withington, 1792'. Contains 150 church compositions, predominantly anthems plus some service settings. Front endpaper has watermark 'DURHAM & CO 1795'. Music manuscript pages have watermark 'GR' with crown and fleur de lis. Front pastedown bears bookplate of Richard Savery, Atherstone [Warwickshire]. Front endpapers have quatrain: 'All who despiseth Music let them show / From th' Word of God, what else the Angels do / Then those that do despise such sacred Mirth / Are neither fit for Heaven, nor for Earth’ and also an inscription in red ink: ‘This book was handed to me by Mr. Henry Savery and is now given to the Parish Church of Kingsclere. A. T. Finch. Sept. 1935’. Has 5-page list of contents ('Table of Anthems'). Anthems predominantly use psalm texts and are arranged according to the numerical order of the psalms. The use of the G clef for the tenor and alto parts suggests that cathedral-style music was being arranged into a format more suited for parish church (West Gallery) ensembles. The book appears to have travelled from Richard Poole, who lived in the village of Withington in Gloucestershire, to the Savery family of Kingsclere in Hampshire, and thence to Kingsclere Parish Church. Genealogical research shows the Poole and Savery families were connected by marriage in the early 19th century.
Contents note: Predominantly vocal anthems.
